In Barcelona, waste management is an organised and straightforward process. Here's how to correctly separate your rubbish during your stay to help keep the city clean.
Bins and Colours
Blue Bin (Paper and Cardboard)
This bin is for recycling paper and cardboard. You can place newspapers, magazines, cardboard boxes, and any clean paper materials inside. Make sure they are free from food residue or plastic.
Yellow Bin (Plastics and Cans)
Use this bin for plastics, cans, and drink cartons (Tetra Briks). Remember to empty and rinse containers before disposing of them. Do not place plastic bags here—only packaging and containers.
Green Bin (Glass)
Glass jars, bottles, and containers should go in the green bin. Don't forget to remove any metal lids before throwing them away.
Brown Bin (Organic Waste)
This bin is for food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, and other organic waste. Do not include plastic, metal, or other non-organic items.
Grey Bin (Non-Recyclable Waste)
Use this bin for items that cannot be recycled, such as nappies, broken ceramics, or cleaning waste. Be careful not to mix these with recyclable materials.
Tips for Guests
- Collection Times: In many areas, bins are emptied at night. Make sure to dispose of your rubbish before 10:00 p.m. to avoid build-up on the streets.
- Avoid Wasting Space: Compact your waste properly to make the most of the bin capacity. This also helps prevent bad smells and keeps the city tidier.
- Street Bins: The small bins on the street are for minor waste only, like wrappers. Please don’t use them for large items or recyclables.
What to Do with Special Waste?
- Appliances and Furniture: If you have old appliances or furniture, please contact us and we will inform you about the collection of large items, as these should not be left in standard bins.
- Paints or Oils: Products like paint or cooking oil must be taken to special recycling points known as puntos limpios, which are facilities specifically set up for this kind of waste.
